What is biomechanical and musculoskeletal assessment?

Podiatric biomechanics is an area of podiatry that links assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. Biomechanics and MSK are often used synonymously.

Many different MSK conditions affect the foot and ankle although the origin may be not be in your foot or ankle but coming from elsewhere on the body. Often if you have a knee or back problem it may be related to the way your foot functions and vice versa.

One of the most common links to this area of practice is associated with sports injuries.
MSK crosses over to a number of other specialist areas of practice, such as diabetes and the "at risk foot" which is related to the need to “offload” an area at risk of ulceration or re-ulceration.

Our MSK podiatrists have a thorough understanding of lower limb function and a good working knowledge of functional anatomy. We work closely with colleagues from physiotherapy, foot and ankle orthopaedics and podiatric surgery to manage your condition effectively.
